SWORDSMAN put in a brave performance to finish 3rd in the valuable Listed Summer Handicap Hurdle at Market Rasen. This was a first Black Type placing for his owners. He is a horse that likes fast ground and he will be campaigned through the rest of the summer.
CLASSIC REMARK made her Group 1 debut in the Nassau Stakes at Glorious Goodwood. She ran a superb race to finish a close 6th beaten only 3 lengths by Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Halfway to Heaven and Lush Lashes winner of the Coronation Stakes (Gr1) was 2nd.
At the end of July Harry had his first “international runner” with a trip to the Channel Islands. Three year old filly RED AMARYLLIS travelled to Jersey to run at Les Landes racecourse. After a 10hrs ferry trip she arrived on the island and was met by “Honest Nev”, the local bookmaker who very kindly provided overnight stabling for her. The track was sharper than Chester and the going exceptionally firm. Carrying 10stone she was ridden by Mattie Batchelor, a National Hunt jockey and a regular rider at Les Landes. She jumped off in front and held that position all the way only to be beaten into 2nd place in the last 100yds by Highland Flight (owned by Mrs E. Roberts who has a horse in training at Windsor House). The Jersey Race Club was most hospitable to our enthusiastic owners Barry & Janet Marsden and we very much look forward to making a return visit in the future.
The older horses continue to run well. BRAVE BOOGIE ran a fine race at Beverley finishing 2nd after leading all the way just to be denied on the line. AIR CHIEF & DR BRASS made the long trip north when finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively at Haydock. Four year old filly CAPE VELVET was bought at the recent July Horses in Training sales and won her debut race for her new owner Will Armitage at Bath. She will be campaigned in England until September and then will transfer to Spain with a view to spending the winter racing in Madrid.
The 2 year olds continue to make their various racecourse debuts. One to catch the eye was BAGBER who was 4th in a decent Newbury maiden. BY PRECEDENCE made a good start to his career at Newmarket on the July course when 6th in a very competitive maiden,. MARCUS CRASSUS and PETER GRIMES made satisfactory debuts and will have learnt much from their respective runs. KEY TO LOVE ran another very encouraging race at Kempton and looks a surefire winner in the future. CAT PATROL learnt a lot from her debut run and ran an excellent race at Lingfield to finish 2nd beaten a length. There are a number of 2yos to make their debuts in the forthcoming weeks which will be exciting.
WANDERING MINSTRAL and JUST A THOUGHT have returned from their summer holidays. They are currently walking and trotting along the roads and tracks around Lambourn. WANDERING MINSTRAL has grown and strengthened during his break and is an exciting hurdling prospect for the forthcoming NH season.
