October Newsletter

13th October 2008

Carrying top weight of 9st 7lbs two year old filly KEY TO LOVE ran a fantastic race to win at Folkestone under Richard Hughes.  Her owner Anamoine Ltd also provided Harry with his first ever winner Situla.

The other flat horses continue to run well with many making the winners enclosure. AROUNDTHEBAY made her 2yo racecourse debut at Warwick. She was 100-1 in the betting but ran a fabulous race to finish 2nd to the delight of her connections.  THREE MOONS recorded her third 2nd consecutive placing when 2nd at Newmarket. It was a nail biting finish with the Juddmonte horse winning the photo finish on the nod. Another unlucky 2nd was CAT PATROL who was collared on the line at Great Leighs. Folkestone saw 6 runners from Windsor House Stables contest four different races.  AIR CHIEF returned to his usual consistent form to finish 2nd. This was preceded by Bagber finishing 3rd in a hot maiden and Desert Thistle also returned to happy hunting ground finishing 3rd.

One of the most memorable moments was watching FESTOSO return to the racecourse. She had signed off her 2yo career in fine form when 3rd to Natagora in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes. She then incurred an injury in the New Year and virtually was retired. Thanks to the dedication of Phil, Gordon and Maggie she made it back to the racetrack after a layoff of 340 days. In this time she had only done two bits of strong work and spent both mornings and afternoons swimming numerous laps of the equine pool. Despite losing 2 lengths at the start of the race FESTOSO finished 3rd beaten an ever decreasing length in a Listed races at the St Leger meeting at Doncaster. She now has black type at both 2yrs and 3yrs.

The National Hunt horses are all thriving. GO BUT GO returned to the yard in mid September after breaking his neck in two places at Taunton in February. This incredibly brave horse refused to give up and after spending months at O’Gorman Slater Mayne vets he convalesced at Templeton Stud near Hungerford. He is now doing normal canters with the string and it is almost as if nothing has happened except for the large lump on the side of his neck. JUST A THOUGHT schooled over chase fences. Ridden by Marcus Foley he jumped very well and will be looking to make his seasonal debut in the next few weeks. WANDERING MINSTRAL is in great shape and will school over hurdles at Mandown next week with a view to make his seasonal debut at the end of the month/beginning of November.

NEWBURY SHOW – Group One Porker!

After a year off due to the foot and mouth outbreak the Newbury Show was awash with livestock including rare breed pigs. Both Truffle and her daughter Russet were shown in the Berkshire Senior Sow class. Much to Christina’s delight and surprise Russet took top honours beating her mother who had been overall Berkshire Breed champion in 2006. This was Christina’s first homebred winner and the news even made the pages of the Racing Post! The girls are now sharing their paddock with the Berkshire Champion of Champions Winner so fingers crossed another Champion will be born in the Spring.
